For the past four years, Indian Valley Middle School has participated in the Montgomery County Reading Olympics.

The goal of Reading Olympics is to increase students' reading for enjoyment. Students collaborate with their teammates to read 45 books that have been selected by a committee of librarians, reading specialists, and classroom teachers. These professionals read the books and write questions, which teams of students answer during the competition. The Olympics are primarily a celebration of reading rather than a contest. All participants are awarded ribbons. Because of the excitement generated about this event, the experience is rewarding for everyone involved.

Reading Olympics is offered as a club at IV, with one 8th period per cycle devoted to reading the books, using the graphic organizer software "Inspiration" to shape knowledge of the books into graphic form, and testing our knowledge at "Bookadventure.com."

Sometime in late April, our teams travel to Wissahickon Middle School to compete with scores of other middle schools. Last year, a fun time was had by all, and our two teams accumulated blue ribbons (the highest range of scores). So, if you like to read, like to compete, and like to have fun, Reading Olympics may be for you!
