Academics: Music
Sixth and Seventh Grades
The sixth grade music class will focus on the development of student knowledge, with the basic aspects of music, the understanding of basic music theory, the understanding of building basic blocks of music, and how they relate to music of the past and present. Classroom performances will include singing, use of classroom instruments, rhythmic activities, and relating these performances to listening activities during class. Listening exercises will be used to identify materials studies in class, and to acquire knowledge and skills necessary for better understanding and enjoyment of music.
The seventh grade music course will focus on the elements of music: rhythm, melody, harmony, tone color and texture. Students will use these elements in the creation and performance of musical compositions on electronic synthesizers. Students will also study a comprehensive collection of music and composers, including a variety of genres and eras. The opportunity to express emotion is unique to the study of music. To complete their musical study, students will be generating personal responses to listening selections through creative writing and discussions.
There is a separate chorus for each sixth and seventh grade. These choruses are open to any student interested in singing with a group. Chorus rehearsals are held twice in a six-day cycle. The educational focus in on proper vocal techniques such as pitch, breath support, and diction. Musical selections include a variety of styles, part-singing, and songs in foreign languages. This group performs two concerts a year (Winter and Spring), which all students must attend.
