Academics: Family & Consumer Science

Family & Consumer Science is a subject in which students learn skills that have lifelong application. The major objective is to develop the full potential of each individual for the present, as well as the future, in both family and consumer situations. The major areas include relationships, resource management, nutrition and wellness, career exploration, and technology. The teaching methods employed enable students to accept responsibility, encourage creativity, and succeed in a variety of environments. Unique features include labs, related equipment usage, and hands-on activities. Computers are used to review units of study, create projects, and operate equipment, thus helping to bridge the span between classroom experience and expectations of the real world.

The study of Family & Consumer Science provides the opportunity to apply language arts, math, science, and social studies knowledge to real world experiences in a fun and exciting environment.

Sixth Grade Students

Course Objectives:
  1. Learn how to purchase and prepare delicious and nutritious foods.
  2. Learn how to keep themselves and food safe.s
  3. Develop skills needed to succeed in a world of limited budgets, fast paced life-styles, confusing claims and easy access to "junk food."
  4. Develop the confidence to set and reach goals, manage time, and make wise decisions.
  5. Work as a team in foods lab and other activities.
  6. Use a variety of new technologies.

Seventh Grade Students

Course Objectives:
  1. Explore the technology associated with the field of textiles by using computers, sewing machines, knitting machines, and cutting edge products.
  2. Develop skills necessary for the care of clothing and other textiles by practicing sewing techniques and laundering methods.
  3. Develop workplace skills by working independently, working cooperatively, reading and following directions, solving problems, and meeting deadlines.
  4. Examine the changes and differences of people from birth to old age and learn how to assess the needs of these various ages.
  5. Learn how to budget time and resources for success in class and in future vocations.
